HTC Speedy a Knight in Sprint armor coming January 6th?

We were just getting used to HTC Knight when along comes more supposed details of the still-unconfirmed slider. Boy Genius Report has what it claims is a leaked accessories list from Sprint that reveals a case for the Knight is due on January 6th, 2011. Does that mean the phone itself is launching on the same date? Would that date have something to do with the start of CES? Oh, and BGR also claims from a source the Knight is getting a new title. What do you think about the HTC Speedy -- descriptive, eh? As far as we can tell, there isn't really much else to go by at this point, so our jump to conclusion will just have to stay under the bed for now.

This donut-shaped mincing knife is meant to be used for finely chopping herbs or anything else that has to be cut down to an almost paste-like texture. Evernote strikes it rich, secures $20 million in funding

Filed under:

If you're an Evernote fan, their official blog has some good news this morning: the wildly popular cloud-centric note taking app has secured a cool $20 million in funding.

That's a big chunk of cash, and Evernote plans on putting it to good use. "Things are moving pretty quickly at Evernote," Phil Libin writes. "They're about to start moving even faster." Count on seeing more features and support for more devices coming in the very near future.

But Evernote isn't stopping there. Libin mentions a lofty new ambition for the app: to become "the global platform for human memory." Evernote wants to be the app to use when it comes to preserving your memories digitally, and it will be interesting to watch its evolution going forward.

Wolfram Alpha in a Nutshell helps you explain Alpha to non-geeks

wolframalpha

Wolfram Alpha is fantastic, but it has one big problem: it's not intuitive. I mean, the interface is intuitive enough - it's a Google-esque single text field where you type anything you want. However, the average Web user has become so conditioned to search engines that what Alpha does is not always fully apparent. After all, when you search for something in Alpha you don't get a page with links. You get a bunch of tables, graphs, facts, and figures - the results are right there.

When you use Alpha for the first time, it all becomes quite apparent. But how can you explain Alpha to someone who doesn't know what it is -- and who isn't nerdy enough to try it out on their own? In this new video (also embedded after the fold), the Wolfram crew tries to provide a definitive answer.

The video doesn't feel as polished as similar explanatory videos from Google, but then again, I guess the amount of resources Wolfram has doesn't really compare. Still, it is a good effort and it's an easy way to illustrate the concept.

Now, if they could just come up with a tagline that's a bit less clumsy than "computational knowledge engine"...

Simures lets you see and share websites in specific resolutions

simures

So, what does your site look like on a tiny mobile device? And what does it look like on a 1024x768 display? Sure, if you're a nerdy Web developer you probably already have a Firefox add-on that resizes your window to the pixel-perfect viewport in the exact dimensions that you require. That's great, but how do you show it to your boss?

Simures is the answer. This link leads you to a 570px by 320px version of Download Squad, and it's very human-readable - simures.com/570x320/downloadsquad.com. I just love it when things have human-readable URLs. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, like the Web is becoming a friendlier, simpler place every day.

Warm and fuzzy feelings aside, Simures is a very valuable tool. I just wish it had a little button for changing the user agent so that I could quickly test Download Squad's mobile website on the desktop. That's really the only missing feature.

T-Mobile LG Optimus T breaks cover, gets benchmarked

LG Optimus T benchmark

We still don't have a firm sale date for the LG Optimus T (see our hands on here), but it's showing up in some T-Mobile locations, and even getting benchmarked.  It's clearly no speed demon, but our tipster says "Overall real-world system performance isn't too bad, though it obviously lacks horsepower."  We also are told the soft-touch coating feels pretty nice in the hand, and it's not full of nasty surprises in the app drawer.  It's clear that this one has entry level written all over it, but it does have some perks we can't overlook --  it ship with Froyo on board (nice work there LG), and my wife reminds me that it comes in purple.  Thanks to you-know-who!

Director of Firefox fires opening salvo at Apple's tyrannical Mac App Store

Mike Beltzner, Mozilla big-wig and Director of Firefox, has just tweeted his rather damning appraisal of the new Mac App Store. In the tweet he points to the Mac App Store Review Guidelines -- and boy are they draconian, even by Apple's cultish masonic standards.

Basically, you can forget about downloading any kind of demo or beta from the Mac App Store. If an app even exhibits a bug, it will be rejected -- does Apple know how many apps, open-source or otherwise, have bugs?

If you thought that was bad enough, the guidelines continue in a similar, it's-our-sandpit! vein: apps that require optional installations (such as Java) will be rejected; apps that require root privileges will be rejected; apps that require license keys or implement their own copy project will be rejected... and so on.

The strict, chaste censorship rules made popular with the iOS App Store are also present -- there won't be any pornographic or violent apps on the Mac App Store, I'm afraid.

Finally, it's fun to compare the startling differences between Mozilla's recently-announced Open Web Apps initiative and Apple's new offering. I know: open isn't everything, and Apple's vice-like control of the user experience is impressive -- but at this rate the Mac is fast becoming a 21st century re-imagining of 20th century AOL. "Don't try to peek over the wall -- this is all the Internet you need!"

OMG/JK: Just Two Guys Drooling Over The New MacBook Air

We had a special guest for this week's episode of OMG/JK, the show I host alongside fellow writer Jason Kincaid: the new MacBook Air. If you've been waiting to see two guys endlessly fawn over something, watch above. And once we wiped the drool off of our faces, we also discussed Kleiner Perkins' new sFund, the $250 million fund to back new social applications. And we talk a bit about the Google TV, its awful remotes, and the quickly heating up connected television space.

Amazon announces 14-day lending feature for Kindle books, newspapers and magazines for Kindle apps

Nook users can already lend ebooks they've purchased to others, and it looks like Kindle users will soon be able to do the same. Amazon has just announced that it will be offering a similar feature "later this year" that will let folks lend books they've purchased to other Kindle users for a 14-day period, during which the person that actually purchased the book won't be able to read it themselves. That feature won't be available for all ebooks, however, as it will be up to individual publishers and rights holders to enable it for a particular book. What's more, Amazon has also announced that Kindle newspapers and magazines will soon be readable on the various free Kindle apps available for other devices -- look for that feature to launch in the "coming weeks."

HP talks webOS 2.0: better browser, Flash support baked in, Skype on the way

Filed under:

HP is gearing up for the release of webOS 2.0, and the new version is packed with updates for Pre and Pixi owners. Apart from rebranding as HP webOS, the most newsworthy changes from an average user's standpoint are the long-awaited arrival of both Flash and Skype.

The updated webOS browser will offer better HTML5 support, and Flash 10.1 beta will be built-in. And yes, Skype is coming to webOS 2.0 -- but only to the Verizon network (cue sad trombone). For users on other carriers, you'll just have to continue waiting patiently -- much like your Android friends did.

Other slick new features include enterprise-friendly VPN support, the Exhibition dock interface, enhanced multitasking with Stacks, and more powerful IM and Facebook apps.

Full details about webOS 2.0 are available from HP
, or take the jump to check out PreCentral's 10 minute video review!

Verizon rolls out 3G Network Extender for $250

Samsung had signaled Big Red's intention to replace its old, non-3G Network Extender as early as CES in January this year -- something Sprint did a couple months back -- but only now are they getting official with the updated model. The aptly-named 3G Network Extender is a warmed-over version of the original, boosting simultaneous connection capability from four to six (Sammy's specs at CES had it listed for eight, interestingly) and offering EV-DO coverage in the event that your home, office, or other location of interest isn't blanketed with Verizon spectrum. The company claims it'll work for up to 40 feet surrounding the device, which seems reasonable considering your average home is rife with RF-hating barriers. There are no monthly fees for the device, but you'll be shelling out $249.99 upfront; it's available now. Follow the break for Verizon's press release.

Strategy of the product ex Apple CEO Steve Jobs gives away '

Remember John Sculley? You know, ex Pepsi man who helps run the Apple and Steve Jobs finally forced by the company. Yes, that Guy.

Duo Leander Kahney, the Cult of Mac editor and former news editor, wired.com is extremely interview with Sculley that offers intriguing explanation of the design methods for the establishment of many products.

Some of the main strategies projects include a beautiful design, minimalism, look at the product from the perspective of the customer as opposed to relying on focus groups, hiring only the best and reject bad work, Kahney Sculley said.

Steve said: "How can any one please what computer based on the graphic should be when they have no idea what is based on the graphic computer is?No one has Ever seen one before, "" Sculley said, when a refusal to use projects explains the focus groups. "He believes that someone is showing the calculator could provide indications of where the computer, because it is simply too large. "

Sculley provides a rare insight into extremely secretive CEO of Apple, which only speaks to a handful of mainstream journalists sometimes. the rest of the interview catches Mac cult.

MakerLegoBot is made of Lego, makes things out of Lego, is so meta it hurts (video)
Building things out of Lego? Lots of fun. Building a thing out of Lego that itself builds other things out of Lego? That's totally mindblowing, and that's what Mindstorm master Will Gorman managed here with his MakerLegoBot masterpiece. The machine takes input from a PC running MLCAD, a sort of industrial design tool for blocknauts, and then churns out anything you like -- so long as it is comprised of 1x2, 2x2, 3x2, 4x2, and 8x2 bricks. These are fed by the machine and methodically placed in exact position, as shown in the video below. If you're hanging out in The Netherlands this upcoming weekend you can also see the thing in action at LegoWorld in Zwolle, or just build your own with the detailed plans at the source link below. But, before you start assembling, know that you'll need 2,400 bricks and nine Mindstorms NXT motors.
